- Crystal Palace eyeing Brais Mendez
- Real Sociedad are likely to sell
- Spaniard could be joined by a compatriot at Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace’s hopes of signing Real Sociedad attacking midfielder Brais Mendez have reportedly been handed a boost. The Spaniard has emerged as a potential target for the Eagles ahead of the summer transfer window.
Spanish outlet Fichajes reported earlier this month that Palace had made a bid for Mendez and it was “well received” by Sociedad. The proposal could “pave the way” for negotiations to take place between the two clubs.
Mendez has been an important player for La Real over the years, and at 29, has plenty of experience. This season, he has posted six goals and two assists in 29 La Liga games.
Crystal Palace handed Brais Mendez boost
Mendez hasn’t featured in Sociedad’s last four of five league games and was only handed 57 minutes against Valencia last weekend. A report from Mundo Deportivo claims that a sale is “the most logical outcome for all parties.”
The four-cap Spain international isn’t believed to be part of the plans at the Anoeta Stadium. Sociedad want to ensure the player’s value doesn’t decrease, which makes this summer the opportune time to sell.
Mendez is a left-footed playmaker who boasts a versatile profile. He will have two years left on his contract in June and has been with his club since the summer of 2022, when he arrived from Celta Vigo for €14m.
There’s no word on how much Sociedad will demand for Mendez or how much Palace have offered. Steve Parish’s transfer chiefs will need to strengthen in many areas.
A Spanish revolution at Selhurst
Should Mendez join Palace he’ll link up with fellow Spanish compatriot Yeremy Pino who arrived last summer. The 23-year-old moved to Selhurst Park from Villarreal for £26m (€30m).
The Eagles might bring another Spaniard to the club if they can persuade Andoni Iraola to replace Oliver Glasner. The departing Bournemouth boss is reportedly at the top of their managerial wishlist.
Iraola is renowned for developing talent and getting the best out of players. He has built one of the most highly-admired squads in the Premier League during his time at the Vitality Stadium.
Mendez isn’t young, so he doesn’t require such hands-on management from Iraola. But he could be an ideal experienced signing who helps Iraola get to grips with the Palace squad.
