Crystal Palace face a pivotal summer as the future of their star midfielder Adam Wharton hangs in the balance, with reports confirming the 22-year-old wants to join a Champions League club.
According to Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, Wharton is keen on a move to a side competing in Europe’s elite competition after playing a central role in the club’s most successful period in their history, winning both the FA Cup and the UEFA Europe Conference League in the space of just over a year.
It has been a remarkable rise for the Blackburn-born midfielder. Wharton joined Palace in February 2024 in an £18m deal from Blackburn Rovers and has since become a genuine fan favourite at Selhurst Park.
Wharton eyeing Champions League move
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are all said to remain linked with the midfielder, and the Champions League question could prove decisive. Without Champions League football to offer, Chelsea may find it more difficult to land him, handing Liverpool and United a potential advantage in any pursuit.
Palace are not making it easy for potential suitors, however. The Eagles are valuing Wharton at £100m, a figure that would make his departure a club record sale. That price tag has reportedly given several interested clubs cause for hesitation. His contract at Selhurst Park runs until 2029, meaning the Eagles are under no obligation to sell and can afford to hold firm on their valuation.
There is still hope at Selhurst Park that Wharton can be persuaded to stay. Crystal Palace want to try to convince him to remain for at least one more season and is open to offering a new contract.
Hope over fear
For Palace fans, the hope is simple that Wharton’s Champions League ambitions can one day be fulfilled in the red and blue of Crystal Palace themselves.
The season just finished, only to underline exactly why so many clubs are circling. He was named Player of the Match in the 2026 UEFA Conference League final, where he played a key role in Palace’s 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig — a display that will have done nothing to cool the transfer speculation surrounding him.
