- Oliver Glasner’s successor hunt proving difficult
- Experience preferred by Palace
- Sean Dyche in contention
Crystal Palace fans may find themselves annoyed as a former Premier League coach has been named as a potential Glasner successor, as the Eagles managerial hunt opens up.
With the season concluding on a high out in Leipzig, Palace have now kickstarted their hunt for a new manager.
Alan Nixon on Patreon has revealed that Palace would rather have domestic experience within their appointment.
Frontrunners and a shortlist of names has speculated, with one man leading the race for the last few weeks. Andoni Iraola has been Palace’s favourite, preferred due to his Premier League experience at Bournemouth and time managing a similar club to Palace.
Yet Iraola is set to take up the vacancy in Merseyside with Arne Slot sacked on Saturday. The Eagles are now looking for the Premier League experience elsewhere in the managerial market.
Sean Dyche “In the frame”
Alan Nixon revealed on Patreon that Palaces preference for domestic experience has kept Sean Dyche in the frame for consideration. Dyche has reportedly always been a “standby alternative” for the Eagles.
Dyche departed Nottingham Forrest in February after only four months in charge. He previously managed Everton for two years, with an average of 1.23 points per game.
The 54-year-old does not appear to be a popular choice among Palace fans, with many taking this news badly. One fan wrote: “Please not Dyche, anyone but Dyche,” while another fan was shocked that Palace would consider moving from Glasner to Dyche.
Is domestic experience essential?
Palace’s reported preference for domestic experience makes sense due to the Eagles now consolidating themselves in the League with their 13th consecutive season. This is why Iraola appeared as the most suitable choice and Dyche may appear as a rational option.
Yet taking a gamble and selecting a manger outside of English football could pay off, as Glasner was yet to manage in the Premier League before moving to South London.
With their highest points finish in the top flight and their first three trophies, Palace’s appointment of Glasner was perfect. Looking outside of England may also be suitable for finding experienced European managers, since the Eagles will be taking part in another season of European football.
