- Oliver Glasner has left Crystal Palace
- AC Milan hold talks with Austrian coach
- Why Glasner deserved a bigger job
Oliver Glasner could be headed for AC Milan following his historic reign at Crystal Palace which ended with a UEFA Conference League triumph. The Austrian bid farewell to the Eagles on Wednesday after guiding them to a first-ever European trophy.
Palace are searching for a successor and the latest name to be linked in Dino Toppmoller. The German replaced Glasner at Eintracht Frankfurt back in early 2023.
As for Glasner, his next challenge may lie in Serie A and with Milan. The Italian heavyweights have set their sights on the most successful manager in Palace’s history.
Glasner to Milan?
According to Fabrizio Romano, Glasner is set to meet Milan next week to discuss potentially replacing Massimiliano Allegri. The Austrian is a top candidate to take the reins at the San Siro.
The Rossoneri were eyeing Andoni Iraola but the Spaniard has snubbed both the Italians and Palace. The departing Bournemouth boss is expected to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool.
Glasner has yet to test himself in Serie A and could fancy reviving one of Europe’s fallen giants. They finished fifth in the league, failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Milan has undergone a complete reset, including the removal of directors, along with Allegri. Despite being one of the greatest clubs in history, there is an enormous amount of work to do at the San Siro.
Glasner should be a Champions League manager
Glasner has been in demand ever since he announced his departure from Palace back in January. His stock has only grown following this week’s Conference League win.
Milan is obviously one of the most prestigious clubs in European football. But Glasner deserved the chance to coach a team competing in the Champions League rather than one desperately trying to at least compete for qualification.
Watching Iraola get the Liverpool job and Glasner go without mention is surprising. His resume speaks for itself, and there are similarities between the Austrian and his beloved former manager, Jurgen Klopp, in personality.
Glasner has given Palace fans memories to last a lifetime and Milan may bag themselves one of the best tacticians in Europe. If he does take over at the San Siro, the Rossoneri he could come up against the Eagles in next season’s Europa League.
