- Brennan Johnson speaks out about joining Palace
- The 25-year-old has “enjoyed” his time so far
- Early struggles after swift January transfer
Brennan Johnson has spoken out about his experience moving from North to South London in January and settling into Crystal Palace.
Johnson arrived at Palace in a £35m deal, which was a club record fee before jargon Strand Larsen joined later in the month. Palace handed him a fresh start after a difficult beginning of the season at Tottenham.
The 25-year-old has struggled to find his form for the Eagles, with 26 appearances, no goals and two assists despite coming close to scoring. Fans have been vocal critics of his performance but his confidence is clearly struggling.
Johnson “enjoying” his time despite struggles
Bobby Manzi shared on X Johnson’s reflection on his transfer and time at South London so far:
“I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far. I feel like if I thought too much about what was going on at Tottenham, maybe I’d lose a bit of concentration and not be able to give it my all.
“It happened so fast in January. I just haven’t had the time to think about what happened at Tottenham.
“I signed and two days later, I was up in Newcastle playing. It was a new experience for me, changing teams mid-season.
Johnson admitted: “I’ll be honest, it was one that I struggled with a little. It was all new, even though it was only in London. But it’s a new changing room, a new team, a new club. It was one that I didn’t really have too much time to reflect on.
The midfielder also gave praise to the support at Palace:
“But what I can say is the boys, the staff and the fans have made me feel welcome. I owe a lot of thanks to them for making me feel at home here.
“I’m thankful for the decision I made.”
Fans should be optimistic
Despite the difficult start to his Palace career, fans should remain optimistic that Johnson is likely to find his feet as the Eagles head into the new season.
Last season at Spurs he was their stand out player with 18 goals across four competitions, including the winning goal in the Europa League final against Manchester United. During his time at Forrest he was also praised for his performances.
Team mates Yeremy Pino and Daichi Kamada both also had difficult starts in South London and know all to well the pressure some fans have put them under for a slow start, but overtime their confidence and performance improved.
