- Austrian insists ‘best day is still to come’
Oliver Glasner told Crystal Palace fans that the best day in the club’s history is on the horizon after bidding farewell to Selhurst Park. The Austrian oversaw his final home game as Eagles boss on Sunday afternoon.
Palace lost 2-1 to newly-crowned Premier League champions Arsenal. Gabriel Jesus and Noni Madueke gave the visitors a two-nil lead before Jean-Philippe Mateta marked Glasner’s final game with a goal off the bench.
The game meant nothing to either club because they had nothing to play for. All the focus for the Holmesdale Road End was on Glasner and saying goodbye to the greatest manager in the club’s history.
“The best day is still to come” – Glasner
Glasner spoke to fans after the game and reflected on his journey at Selhurst Park. He told supporters (via Ben Jacobs):
“What I learnt in two years here is that you almost always have to agree with the chairman, but today I don’t have to agree. He said the best day possible was the FA Cup final, but I think the best day is still to come in three days in Leipzig.”
Glasner still has one more game in charge and that is the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday (May 27th). He ended his speech with a heartwarming line:
“Two years and two months ago, I arrived, and you probably didn’t know me. I came here as a stranger but now I feel like a South Londoner.”
Glasner arrived at Palace in February 2024 and led Palace to the FA Cup last season. He’s bidding to guide the Eagles to their first-ever European trophy in Leipzig.
Steve Parish hails Glasner
Palace chairman Steve Parish was also on hand to thank Glasner for his historic reign at Selhurst Park. He told the Austrian:
“You gave us one of the best days of our lives at Wembley so thank you for that. We wish you all the best for the future.”
Parish and Glasner have held a close relationship throughout the latter’s tenure. He stood by the 51-year-old during a difficult start to the year when many called for him to be dismissed before the end of the season.
That proved to be the right decision as Glasner is on the brink of adding a European trophy to the club’s trophy cabinet. He will undoubtedly go down as the all-time greatest coach in Palace history.
