- Thomas Tuchel left Adam Wharton out of World Cup squad
- Crystal Palace midfielder’s omission a shock
- Tuchel makes hugely controversial claim
Thomas Tuchel has explained his reasons for omitting Adam Wharton from England’s 2026 World Cup squad. The Crystal Palace midfielder was one of several surprise names to be left out of the 26-man squad for the tournament.
Wharton had been included in Tuchel’s squad for the March friendlies and played well in a 1-1 draw against Uruguay. He then withdrew from international duty due to an Adductor issue.
Fortunately, the 22-year-old didn’t spend too long on the sidelines and helped Palace advance to the final of the UEFA Conference League. His performances in both legs of a 5-2 aggregate win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals were particularly impressive.
“Lost a bit of form” – Tuchel on Wharton
Tuchel didn’t seem to think so, though, as he not only omitted him from his squad. He has also claimed that the player lost form after March:
“To the Adam Wharton point, we spent a lot of time talking about number eights and number six’s. And it was almost impossible to decide, because Adam was good in March. He lost a bit of form after that with Crystal Palace, but not decisively.”
It’s fine if Tuchel doesn’t think Wharton is worth taking to the World Cup with England. But to come out with such a poor analysis of the player is extremely concerning, especially if you’re a Three Lions fan.
It could be argued that Wharton’s best spell during the campaign came in April. His outing in the incredible 3-1 win over Shakhtar in Poland was phenomenal.
Tuchel’s comments come after he selected Jordan Henderson in his squad. The Brentford midfielder has played just 38 minutes worth of football since March.
Just completely wrong
Wharton has appeared 51 times across competitions this season, registering one goal and seven assists. He has been at the centre of Palace’s resurgence since the turn of the year and could end the season with a Conference League winners’ medal.
Any footballing fan who has watched the former Blackburn Rovers youngster since March would acknowledge how good he’s been. To say he lost a bit of form is ludicrous and makes the decision to omit him look even worse.
Is Tuchel actually watching these players since his explanation for their absences doesn’t measure up? He admitted he hadn’t even watched Ivan Toney before asking Matthias Jaissle how his Al-Ahli frontman has been faring in Saudi Arabia.
