- Bayer Leverkusen rival Crystal Palace for Andoni Iraola
- German club have also been eyeing Oliver Glasner
- Why the Eagles might be keen for him to take the job
Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Andoni Iraola could end successfully, depending on Oliver Glasner agreeing to become Bayer Leverkusen’s new manager. The Eagles have made Iraola their top choice to succeed Glasner after he leaves in June.
The Daily Telegraph‘s Mick McGrath reports that Iraola is on Leverkusen’s radar if they decide to change coach. That is an issue for Palace, who want the Spaniard to become their new manager once Glasner heads for the exit door following the UEFA Conference League final.
Iraola himself is leaving Bournemouth when his contract expires in June. The 43-year-old is highly sought after and now has the option to challenge himself in the Bundesliga or remain in the Premier League.
Interestingly, reports in Germany claimed earlier this week that Leverkusen had approached Glasner about becoming their new manager. The Austrian has yet to respond and is fully focused on seeing out the rest of the campaign at Selhurst Park.
Glasner has just two more games in charge, first the visit of Premier League champions Arsenal on the final day of the season tomorrow (May 24). He then takes his troops to Leipzig, Germany, to face Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final (May 27).
Steve Parish might now be keen for the Austrian to take the Leverkusen job given it appears to be a two-horse race for Iraola. If the Bundesliga club appoint Glasner, that paves the way for Palace to land their ideal replacement.
Iraola has earned huge plaudits throughout his time in the dugout with the Cherries. This season, he’s guided the South Coast outfit to European qualification and they could even make the UEFA Champions League if results go their way tomorrow.
Palace have three options
Palace seem to have three candidates remaining on their shortlist of Glasner replacements. Iraola sits atop of that list but they are also admirers of Lens’ Pierre Sage.
The French tactician has worked wonders throughout his time in his homeland and his stock continues to grow. There is another unnamed candidate under consideration but no word on whether they are Premier League experienced.
Palace won’t be making a decision until the season is over and they could be appointing a new manager as Conference League winners. That remains the focus for the South London outfit.
