- Oliver Glasner salutes Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze
- Ex-Crystal Palace star has won the Premier League
- Glasner said he made “the right decision”
Oliver Glasner has risked riling up Tottenham Hotspur fans with his comments on former Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze becoming a Premier League champion at Arsenal. The English attacker has won the title in his first season at the Emirates.
Eze left South London for North London last summer, joining the Gunners in a £67.5m deal. He has become a key player in Mikel Arteta’s team and been a thorn in Spurs’ side.
The 27-year-old nearly joined the Lilywhites until making a last-minute phone call to Arteta to see if a move to the newly-crowned champions was possible. He got his wish and, as a result, has already picked up a Premier League winner’s medal.
“Right decision” – Glasner on Eze
Glasner offered his thoughts on Eze’s achievement and highlighted the English attacker’s decision to snub Tottenham for Arsenal. He said ahead of Palace’s clash with the Gunners:
“A special congratulations to Eberechi Eze, he made the right decision to go to Arsenal and not another club.”
Eze could have been fighting it out at the bottom of the Premier League table if he’d made the move to Spurs. The Whites find themselves still in the midst of a relegation battle ahead of the final day of the season.
Instead, the 27-year-old has not only helped Arteta finally win the title. He has destroyed their North London rivals on two occasions, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-1 win at the Emirates and a brace in a repeat of that scoreline away from home.
Eze has appeared 50 times across competitions for the title-winners, posting 10 goals and six assists. He could end up with a first-ever European trophy should his side beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on May 30th.
The right decision
Arsenal’s announcement video for Eze’s capture used the song ‘Indecision’ by Sampha. You could argue that track is more associated with the former Palace man than it is the singer.
Eze’s decision to take a leap of faith and try to make the move to the Emirates happen has proven to be the right one. His decision to turn down Spurs looks even more justified by each passing week.
While the Lilywhites have slipped down the table, their rivals have dominated the top-flight. It was clear that the England international had his heart set on rejoining his boyhood club, which had released him as a youth player.
