- Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton in contention for World Cup
- England squad set to be announced soon
- Some Three Lions fans want him to start
Crystal Palace fans are well aware of Adam Wharton’s talent, and it appears he’s now won England supporters over. The Eagles midfielder is competing for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad for the World Cup this summer.
Wharton has been a mainstay in Palace’s team this season and has been hugely influential. He has posted one goal and seven assists in 51 games across competitions.
The 22-year-old’s main focus is ending the campaign with another major trophy. He’ll undoubtedly be a starter when the South London outfit face Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League final on May 27th.
Adam Wharton’s state of play
Tuchel called Wharton up for England’s friendlies during the March international break. He started in a 1-1 draw against Uruguay but had to pull out of a 1-0 defeat to Japan due to an adductor issue.
The former Blackburn Rovers youngster has earned four caps for his national team. He is battling it out with the likes of Elliot Anderson, Kobbie Mainoo, James Garner and Jordan Henderson for a spot on the plane to the World Cup.
Wharton made Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024 despite only just getting started at Palace. Many believe he is a must-have for Tuchel to take the Three Lions to North America this summer.
England fans on Wharton
GOAL asked fans whether Wharton deserves to be a starter for England at this summer’s World Cup. The responses were mostly in support of him being in Tuchel’s starting XI.

Another wrote: “At this rate, it’s hard to argue against it Adam Wharton has the composure, vision and intelligence England’s midfield needs. If he keeps performing like this, he deserves a serious shot at starting at the World Cup.”
England start their World Cup campaign in Group L, facing Croatia on June 17th, Ghana on June 23rd and Panama on June 27th. Before that, the Three Lions have two friendlies against New Zealand on June 6th and Costa Rica on June 10th.
