Crystal Palace player ratings: Southampton (H)

Crystal Palace became the first top-flight side ever to lose their first five games without scoring a goal after suffering a 1-0 loss to Southampton.

There was an air of excitement around Selhurst Park this afternoon as ex-England manager Roy Hodgson took to the red and blue dugout for the first team but the ambience quickly turned sour when Dusan Tadic’s cross was parried away by Wayne Hennessey straight into the path of Steven Davis, who placed his shot into the bottom corner.

The Eagles were much improved from their previous two home performances but this will be little consolation as the club sit adrift at the bottom of the Premier League.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was back in the team following injury and he created several chances. The Chelsea loanee flashed one just past the post before a powerful run ended in his shot being blocked by Ryan Bertrand.

He also created two sitters for Christian Benteke and Jason Puncheon but both failed to convert. The latter had a second chance straight after his initial miss but Saints keeper, Fraser Forster made a fantastic save to deny the Palace captain.

It was another day to forget for the Selhurst faithful and the club is now facing somewhat of a crisis in the league as they face both Manchester clubs and Chelsea in their next three games.

Here is how the individual players performed.
